B Dubois And The Conservation Of Races - 1103 Words
Slavery, segregation, and police brutality have vigorously evaded black lives throughout American history. This violent treatment towards African Americans has been justified by whites due to our racial distinctions. W.E.B Dubois explores the concept of race and how we can use it advantageously in his infamous ââ¬Å"The Conservation of Racesâ⬠. Dubois writes this propositional essay to the American Negro Academy as a testament of his scholarly merit to Alexander Crumell, his black intellectualist hero. The piece is written in 1896 twenty years after Reconstruction during Jim Crow segregation. In response to this dire time and his own personal racial inquiries, Dubois dissects the etymology of race accrediting its origins to biological differences, but also social means such as ââ¬Å"common blood and language, always of common historyâ⬠. In addition, he demands the Academy to meet certain moral criterion in order to lead the Negro race. One of ââ¬Å"The Conservation of Racesâ⬠strengths is its fervent, passionate call towards African Americans to exhibit black excellence. Dubois expresses the need of the Negro race to give ââ¬Å"to civilization the full spiritual message, which they are capable of givingâ⬠. His rhetoric exemplifies his belief in his raceââ¬â¢s full potential if they unite in solidarity. Why College Athletes Should Get Paid free essay sample
They are the ones who make the main event possible. Without the athletes, there would be no game. They are the entertainment that the crowd is paying for and they receive none of the profit. The number one reason why college athletes should be paid is because they deserve it. College student athletes are working hard anywhere between 30 to 40 hours a week to be successful and excellent. On average every college athletic season ranks in between ten and 150 million dollars in revenue and zero dollars are rewarded to the athletes. Recently there was about an 11 billion dollar deal made between the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the television station, CBS. The deal revolved around a popular event in menââ¬â¢s college basketball, March Madness. The deal was that from 2011 to 2024, CBS would be the station to air the three weekend long event, and again, zero dollars go to the athletes making the event possible. We will write a custom essay sample on Why College Athletes Should Get Paid or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page March Madness doesnââ¬â¢t exist without the athletes and they receive none of the billions of dollars the event makes. Andrew Luck was a starting quarterback for Stanford University and a Heisman Trophy candidate. Fans came to the Stanford football games just to see him play. People purchased the jersey emblazoned with his name and number from the Stanford gift shop and he made absolutely no profit from this. Everything went to Nike and the University itself. Andrew Luck is just one example among the many college student athletes who are the stars of their team bringing business to their university and receiving no profit. College student athlete should be paid because what they do is almost like slave work. They go to class for three o five hours, attend their practice, game or workout, and then study and do school work for maybe two to six hours. It is almost as if the university is the ââ¬Å"pimpâ⬠and the student athlete is their ââ¬Å"whoreâ⬠doing all the work. They get no profit for all of the revenue they are bringing in because of their hard work. Jalen Rose, a member of the ââ¬Å"Fab Fiveâ⬠at the University of Michigan, wrote, ââ¬Å"Universities, coaches, apparel companies, and everyone in between financially benefits from the success of these student-athletes except for the players themselves. This is a small investment for universities that see millions of dollars in revenue each semester and treat these student athletes as indentured servants. â⬠This is a harsh way to put it but it is the truth. College student athletes should be paid because they have no time for a job. The university makes the sport their job because it is so time consuming, and you need to be fully dedicated to the sport to perform well. Since not all athletes can rely on their families for college spending money, they should be able to rely on their talent. Since their talent is their sport and it is what they are working at every single day, they should be rewarded for it. In 2010, five Ohio State players, including star quarter back Terelle Pryor, were suspended for five games after receiving discounted tattoos at a tattoo shop and cash for selling personal awards, Buckeye memorabilia, and championship rings. I know this doesnââ¬â¢t sound so good for the players, but if they were given just a sliver of the universities profits from their football games, they wouldnââ¬â¢t have been so tempted to do this. Terelle Pryor is famous name in Ohio and in most of the USA. Everybody knows who he is. He is an amazing player and he was an extremely important part of the Ohio State football team. It makes no sense that in order for him to make a buck, he had to resort to selling signed Buckeye memorabilia and his own championship ring. It really is sad. He was a famous football player that couldnââ¬â¢t afford a tattoo, but every week he was a main reason fans were paying good money for a ticket to an Ohio State football game. Fans pay money to see and an entertaining and exciting performance and that is what Terelle Pryor did on the field. He should have been paid for what he was doing. If he was, he wouldââ¬â¢ve have never had to resort to something so negative. Many people believe that college student athletes should not be paid because they are receiving free education through their scholarships. People think with college costing anywhere from $9,000 to $30,000 a year, why should these athletes get paid as well as have free schooling. What people donââ¬â¢t think about is the money being brought into the school because of the athletic events. Penn Stateââ¬â¢s football program brings in nearly forty million dollars a year, and Penn State isnââ¬â¢t even the school producing the greatest income. The real questions are: ââ¬Å"Where is that money going? Why isnââ¬â¢t it going to the athletes working their butt off and making that event possible? â⬠In the end, they are bringing in more money to the school than they are receiving through their scholarship. Therefore, they should be paid.

Triumphs of Experience
Triumphs of Experience In order to guarantee the conceptual soundness of the would-be undertaken longitudinal study of the selected cohort of UCLA students (concerned with identifying/measuring the ââ¬Ëfactors of happinessââ¬â¢, throughout their lives), its theoretical premise must be consistent with the currently predominant socio-cultural discourse. Moreover, it must also be observant of what account for the driving forces behind the process of this discourse attaining ever more of the previously unheard-of qualitative characteristics.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Triumphs of Experience specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The validity of this suggestion can be illustrated, in regards to Vaillantââ¬â¢s observation that: ââ¬Å"Societies are forever changingâ⬠(10). In its turn, this presupposes the continual alteration of the manner, in which people perceive the significance of such vaguely defined terms as ââ¬Ëhappinessà ¢â¬â¢. Probably the primary discursive aspect of the discourse of post-modernity, which now encompasses the realities of a modern living in America, has to do with the fact that, unlike what it used to be the case even a few decades ago, the deployment of the positivist approach towards conceptualizing the notion of ââ¬Ësocietyââ¬â¢ can no longer be considered thoroughly appropriate. The reason for this is apparent ââ¬â in light of recent discoveries in the fields of sociology, biology and cybernetics, the overall quality of a particular human society is not merely summative of the qualities of its integral parts ââ¬â it is something that creates the discursive realm of its own. As Uphoff and Krishna pointed out: ââ¬Å"It (the notion of society) refers not to a single, homoà geneous thing which can be larger or smaller, stronger or weaker, but rather to networks of relationships between state institutions and the citizens within a society who are subject to state authority as well as among those citizensâ⬠(358). What it means is that, contrary to what the commissioners of the original Grant Study used to assume, the measure of the society membersââ¬â¢ happiness is not something innately ego-centric/individualistic, which implies that it cannot be discussed in terms of a ââ¬Ëthing in itselfââ¬â¢. One of the major findings of the mentioned Study indirectly confirms the full soundness of such our point of view, in this respect: ââ¬Å"Warm, intimate relationships are the most important contributing factor in the establishment of a good lifeâ⬠(Vaillant 37). After all, this particular finding indicates that it is specifically oneââ¬â¢s ability to choose in favor of the socially integrated lifestyle, which is the most important predictor of his or her happiness. In its turn, this exposes the erroneousness of the Studyââ¬â¢s initial premise (if assessed through the lenses of the discourse of post-modernity) that oneââ¬â ¢s happiness should be discussed in terms of ââ¬Ëachievementââ¬â¢, rather than in terms of a ââ¬Ëcontinuous processââ¬â¢. It is even more inappropriate to presume (as the original Study does) that a personââ¬â¢s likelihood to achieve a financial prosperity is being reflective of what happened to be the particulars of his or her racial background/social status. Due to being utterly euro-centric, this premise is profoundly inconsistent with the spirit of cultural relativism, emanated by the process of American society becoming increasingly multicultural, on one hand, and progressively less fond of the neo-Liberal idea that the accumulation of material riches is the actual purpose of oneââ¬â¢s life, on the other (Hilton 226). Yet, this represented the actual rationale behind the original Studyââ¬â¢s methodological approach to selecting the would-be engaged participants: ââ¬Å"Well-to-do (White) men donââ¬â¢t die early of malnutrition, infection, accident, or b ad medical care, as happens much too often to poorâ⬠¦ These men had a high likelihood of long lifeâ⬠(Vaillant 10). In this respect, the proposed longitudinal study of UCLA Bruins will be much different ââ¬â as opposed to what it is the case with the Grant Study, its ââ¬Ëdecathlon of successââ¬â¢ will be inherently holistic. That is, it will be concerned with measuring the participantsââ¬â¢ ââ¬Ëpredictors of happinessââ¬â¢ in close conjunction with what appear to be the measurable aspects of their ability to function as the productive society members. After all, as it was pointed out earlier, there is now indeed a real reason to believe that in the post-industrial society oneââ¬â¢s chances to attain happiness and to experience it on a prolonged basis, positively relate to his or her ability to remain on the path of a continual self-perfection ââ¬â regardless of what happened to be the concerned personââ¬â¢s social status.Advertising Look ing for essay on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The above-mentioned explains our rationale for applying adjustments to the original Studyââ¬â¢s approach towards collecting the ââ¬Ëintakeââ¬â¢ data. The chief of them will be concerned with qualifying the predominantly non-White/socially-underprivileged UCLA students to participate in the Study. Such our proposal is dictated by the fact that, even though it is indeed more likely for the lifespan of White/well-off students to be longer than that of their non-White/socially underprivileged counterparts (something that formally makes the former better suited to participate in the longitudinal study), the fertility rate of Whites in the U.S. continues to decline (Ma 2285). In its turn, this significantly reduces the chances of White students to attain happiness through social integration. After all, oneââ¬â¢s ability to contribute to the societyââ¬â ¢s overall well-being continues to be commonly assessed, in relation to what appears to be the measure of his or her eagerness to indulge in ââ¬Ëbaby-makingââ¬â¢, as one of the most socially beneficial activities. The validity of this statement can be illustrated, in regards to the fact that the so-called ââ¬Ëwelfare statesââ¬â¢ are dialectically predetermined to honor oneââ¬â¢s talent in propagating the species ââ¬â and, as we are well aware of, the building of such a state has been proclaimed the Governmentââ¬â¢s official goal (Sandel 11). Because the joys of parenthood are commonly regarded in terms of ââ¬Ëhappinessââ¬â¢, and because the ââ¬Ëfactor of happinessââ¬â¢ (in this respect) can be measured with ease (the more children the more happiness), we propose that the outcome ââ¬Ëlow in psychological distressââ¬â¢ (in the original Studyââ¬â¢s Decathlon of Flourishing) should be replaced with the result ââ¬Ëthe number of children fro m 25-year-old onwardsââ¬â¢. The appropriateness of such a proposal on our part, can be confirmed even further, in regards to the well-known fact that it is specifically the innately lonely/introvertedly-minded (and therefore often childless) individuals, who are very likely to experience the sensation of psychological distress at some point in their lives, which leads towards depression and alcohol abuse. The original Studyââ¬â¢s findings leave only a few doubts about it: ââ¬Å"Men of white Anglo- Saxon Protestant (WASP) and Irish extractions had rates of alcohol abuse five times those of men of Italian extractionâ⬠(Valliant 290). To make the UCLA Studyââ¬â¢s Decathlon of Flourishing even more discursively sound, its outcome of ââ¬Ëincluded in Whoââ¬â¢s Who in Americaââ¬â¢ should be replaced with the one that can be formulated as ââ¬Ëthe indications of the participantââ¬â¢s social advancement/self-perfectionââ¬â¢. The logic behind this suggestion is as follows: the initial outcome is concerned with measuring the participantsââ¬â¢ success in attaining the dominant social status. This, in turn, reflects the outcomeââ¬â¢s close affiliation with the discourse of Euro-centrism/Darwinism, based on the assumption that the qualitative dynamics within a particular society are always concerned with the never-ending struggle of everybody against everybody for the ââ¬Ëroom under the Sunââ¬â¢ (Nelson 493). However, as it was implied earlier, this assumption has been long ago proven conceptually fallacious ââ¬â all due to its acute lack of systemic soundness. The suggested outcome will assess the strength of the participantsââ¬â¢ commitment to applying a continual effort towards becoming ââ¬Ëbetter menââ¬â¢, on one hand, and evaluate their ability to derive an emotional pleasure (happiness) out of the process, on the other. The measurable variables, in this respect, can be concerned with the number of books that a p articular participant manages to read throughout the set period, the number of professional degrees that he or she holds, and/or with the number of confirmed volunteer-activities, on this personââ¬â¢s part. Even though that the mentioned suggestions (as to how the UCLA longitudinal study could be improved) are far from being considered exhaustive, there is nevertheless a good reason to believe that while keeping them in mind, the studyââ¬â¢s commissioners will be able to increase the objective value of the would-be obtained data. This should come as the consequence of the fact that, due to having incorporated these suggestions as its integral part, the studyââ¬â¢s methodological apparatus will be much more likely to resonate with the discourse of post-modernity ââ¬â just as it was hypothesized at the very beginning of this paper.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Triumphs of Experience specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Hilton, Matthew. Animals as source for human organ transplants Case Study
Animals as source for human organ transplants - Case Study Example The issue mainly relates to problems associated with xenotransplantation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the problems raised and discuss whether the problems raised concern me or not. The paper will also explain the main ethical approach groupings that are most influential in my thinking about the case and the consequences most important to me regarding the case. Xenotransplantation prospect is associated with public health issues. It is reported that xenotransplantation is capable of transferring some risks to the wider society (Patel and Rushefsky 103). The major concern is that xenotransplantation is capable of transmitting infectious agents, like viruses from animals to human beings. It is noted that retroviruses are the major concerns since there exist several examples of such viruses moving from one species and becoming infectious in another. It is also noted that retroviruses fails to show signs of the disease at its initial stages (Institute of Medicine 42). Therefore, in case transplant patients become infected with a retrovirus, then the virus would be capable of spreading to the patientââ¬â¢s family, close contacts, carers and the entire population before it can be established that the infection has occurred (McLean and Williamson 43). The widespread introduction of xenotransplantation has cost implications to the health care system. Opponents of Xenotransplantation argue that the procedure would displace other methods, which are perhaps more worthwhile (McLean and Williamson 43). Therefore, the procedure should not be embraced. Institute of Medicine note that the argument is based on the fact that survival rate for xenograft recipients has been poor (42). As such, early recipients are the one being used as subjects of experiment for this technological development. Some of the issues raised with regard to the case concern me while others do not. The ones that concern me
